ELA (English Language Arts)
K-5: Our classrooms from kindergarten through fifth grade utilize a reading series called Amplify CKLA. In grades K-2 the focus is on early literacy skills. Students are learning foundational skills the are the backbone to the development of literacy. Amplify's approach helps close gaps in a student's prior knowledge and vocabulary by blending the foundational skills with background knowledge.
In Grades K-2 the students will have a separate skills and knowledge focus piece. The skills strand looks at phonological awareness, phonics, word recognition, writing mechanics, handwriting, and basic reading comprehension. The knowledge strand builds background knowledge in areas like history, science, and literature. Additionally students will engage with vocabulary acquisition, read complex texts, work on listening and speaking skills, and learn how to analyze texts.
In Grades 3-5 the students will the skills and knowledge pieces are brought together and are taught as one whole concept instead of two separate strands of learning. The idea centered around the idea that in K-2 students learn to read and then by grade 3 and onwards students are reading to learn.
In Grades 6-8 our student use a series called HMH's Into Literature. Starting in 6th grade Language Arts and Reading are taught separately by different teachers but those teachers work closely together to reinforce the work being done in each other's classes. Language Arts will take a greater focus on writing skills and putting them to work by writing papers on selected topics and in certain styles. Reading will focus on looking at quality pieces of literature for understanding, enjoyment, and analysis. In addition to Into Literature, our 6th-8th grade classrooms may utilize a program called Writable which is an online writing platform used in conjunction with Into Literature.
