Exploratories/Specials
K-4: Our classes that are outside the core group of study are called Specials in kindergarten through fourth grade. These classes include: physical education, STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics), music, and library/media center. In STEAM class students pull from all the STEAM subjects to increase their knowledge, do interesting activities and projects, and explore the world around them. Music class gives our students the foundations of music and performance and how to see and hear music all around them. In the Library/Media center the students utilize the school libraries but also engage in learning tasks and the basics of keyboarding and computer literacy.
5th Grade: In the middle school setting classes outside the core group of study are called Exploratories. In fifth grade students rotate through Art, Music, Health, and Computers/Technology. In music class students will start to dabble with picking musical instruments but also continuing their growth and understanding of music overall. Art class gives the students hands-on experience in different mediums and modes of expression. Health class provides age-appropriate health information and nutritional information for our students to make healthy decisions. In computers/technology class students expand upon their learning from K-4 and start to learn how to code and utilize the computer in an age appropriate manner.
6th-7th Grades : Our sixth and seventh grade students rotate on a trimester basis through Art, Health, and Computers/Technology. At this age, band/music is now a separate program and not all students partake. Those students who choose to continue playing an instrument utilize study hall and other free time in their schedule for practice and lessons.
8th Grade: In eighth grade our students continue to rotate through Exploratory classes on the trimester schedule. All students take health and computers/technology. However, eighth grade students may choose between Art and Agriculture for their third rotation. Agriculture is taught by a high school teacher that comes to the middle school for the period each day. The class focuses on basics of agricultural education like food sources, animal science, and the environment.
