Special Education
PreK-8: Our district utilizes multiple approaches to special education throughout our district and grade levels. The most important thing when it comes to special education is making sure we are providing an equitable experience and education for our students in the least restrictive environment for them. We prioritize, when possible, an inclusion-based approach where special education students are fully integrated with their peers. We recognize that in some cases the students need more support and services and provide cross categorical classrooms for those students that need these supports. Most special education students in our district are with their peers for most of the day and may only pull out for extra support in a subject or two. This inclusive approach is helpful both to our students as we work to educate and meet the needs of all of our students.
Most curriculums used in special education are the same as their grade-level peers but with some possible accommodations or modifications as identified for each student. In addition, the Unique Learning System is used for students that require more supports.
"Mathematics is not about numbers, equations, computations, or algorithms: it is about understanding."
